Kenya - Prime Minister Odinga To Contest Election Results In Court

Kenya's presidential candidate Prime Minister Raila Odinga will not concede defeat and likely contest the just concluded presidential elections in which his rival Uhuru Kenyatta secured the votes for the outright win in the first round, Odinga's adviser confirmed on Saturday.
Salim Lone said the 67-year-old Odinga will move to the Supreme Court to challenge the margin given to 51-year-old Kenyatta's in vote tally if the electoral body declares him as the fourth president of Kenya.

"Definitely the PM will be moving to the Supreme Court to challenge the flawed electoral process," Lone told Xinhua on Saturday. However, he did not indicate when the case will be filed.

Lone said Odinga who garnered 5.34 million votes in the Monday's historic general elections against Kenyatta's 6.17 million votes out of 12.3 million votes cast will seek the legal mechanism after the Independent Elections and Boundary Commission (IEBC) announcement.

Kenyatta secured 50.03 percent of votes in general elections in early hours of Saturday, provisional results showed, passing the mark of 50 percent, after votes from all 291 constituencies were counted. The results indicated that Kenyatta may win in the first round, but still need final confirmation from the IEBC that said it will make final announcement on presidential elections at 11 a. m. on Saturday. Odinga is scheduled to hold a news conference on Saturday.

Supporters of Kenyatta and his running mate, thronged the streets, estates with twigs, vuvuzelas on Saturday to celebrate. Those with vehicles and motorcycles moved around estates, flashing their lights and blaring horns to express their joy.

The jubilant supporters blocked several streets in Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret and Nyeri with Kenyatta portraits as they danced and praised both Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto.
