NIGERIA: We’re In Control Of Ebola – Governor Fashola

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, yesterday assured  residents of the state that there is no cause for alarm on the Ebola scourge, saying collaborative efforts of government have brought the disease under control.

Meanwhile, the governor has also confirmed receipt of N200 million from the Federal Government to fight the virus

The governor, who gave the assurance when MTN Nigeria came to present personal protective equipment (PPEs) to the state as part of the company’s support for the war against Ebola virus disease (EVD) at the Lagos House in Ikeja, said his government quickly rose to tackle the virus through collective efforts, just as he commended the communication giant for its gesture.

He said: “On behalf of the Lagos State Government, we want to thank you for the public-spirited gesture. This clearly has been the tradition which we have come to associate your brand with and especially in matters on health and education issues.”

Fashola said as a government and people, they had benefitted from MTN’s disposition when they provided a dialysis machine to the state government and also partnered with the government in enhancing the standard of education in the state.

He commended the company for being there always to lend its support in the two critical areas of health and education, adding that the gesture had helped to build the state’s human capital.

The governor commended health workers, who risked their lives to save Ebola victims, saying: “They stood up to be countered when there was dire need, when there was fear even at the highest levels of government. But in spite of those fears, some men and women stood up to be counted. We will talk about them later.

“The health team accepts this gesture and also wishes to use the opportunity to re-iterate, as I said in my broadcast a fortnight ago, that while we understand and fully appreciate the humanitarian concern that propels these things, the real problem is the sufficiency of experienced virologists and Ebola specialists in managing and when the sub-region is challenged on many fronts that capacity thins out. That really is the problem. So, it is not always a money problem; as at this time, it is not really an equipment problem, it is a human capacity problem.

“We are at a stage where, as I said before, we do not need to panic. Ebola virus is not automatic death sentence. A lot of knowledge is being gained on a daily basis, even at this moment, about the behaviour of the virus and that knowledge helps the scientists to prepare even better to respond.”

Earlier, Chairman, MTN Nigeria, Dr. Pascal Dozie, said: “Our coming here is very simple. When you see a good thing you appreciate it and want to be part of it. We have watched the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Fashola when this Ebola incident occurred.

“We are here to express our appreciation and lend our support. We had already started supporting their cause by providing call centres, that is, Ebola hot line where doctors are responding to enquiries and findings.”
