Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan Carries Out Minor Cabinet Reshuffle Following The Recent Resignation Of Seven Ministers

President Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday, carried out a minor cabinet reshuffle to fill the vacancies created by the recent resignation of seven ministers.



This was part of the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, held at the Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Minister of State (II) for Foreign Affairs, Dr Nurudeen Mohammed, announced the changes while briefing House correspondents at the end of the meeting.

According to Nurudeen, the Minister of Defence, Lieutenant-General Aliyu Gusau (retd), was to oversee the functions of the Minister of State for Defence.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr Steve Oru, is also to supervise the office of the Minister of State in the ministry.

Similarly, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Olusegun Aganga, will oversee the duties of his Minister of State.

The Minister of State (I) for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Viola Onwuliri, took over from Mr Nyesom Wike as the substantive Minister of State for Education.

The Minister of Special Duties/ Inter-Governmental Affairs, Mr Kabiru Turaki, was named the Minister of Labour and Productivity.

The Ministry of Information is to be supervised by Dr Nurudeen Mohammed, the Minister of State (II) for Affairs, while Dr Khaliru Alhassan, while the Minister of State for Health is to act as the Minister of Health.

Meanwhile, the new Minister of State for Education, Professor Onwuliri, has vowed to reduce the incidence of mass failure in public examinations in Nigeria.

Onwuliri was redeployed by Jonathan to the Ministry of Education after a minor cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday.

Until her new appointment, she was the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs 1 and was redeployed to Ministry to replace the former Minister of State for Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike, who along side six others resigned from Jonathan’s cabinet to pursue their political ambitions.

Speaking when she was received at the Federal Ministry of Education by the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, shortly after the weekly FEC meeting, Onwuliri pledged to work harmoniously with Shekarau to move education forward.

She expressed concerned over mass failure in public examinations conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO), West African Examination Council (WAEC) among others and vowed to work towards reducing its incidence and improvement in quality of education.
