NIGERIA: Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Agbonavbare, Succumbs To Cancer

A former Nigerian goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbare, has passed away in Spain. Agbonavbare former club, Rayo Vallecano, confirmed that the Edo-born goalkeeper died yesterday morning.

"The Rayo Vallecano family and fans are in mourning. Cancer has taken Wilfred away from us this morning," Rayo announced via their official Twitter account on Tuesday.

The former goalkeeper had been battling cancer and had spent his last days in a hospital in Alcala de Henares in Spain, according to Spanish newspaper, AS.

According to the Spanish newspaper's report, Agbonavbare had wished to see his three sons who currently live in Nigeria. His former club, Rayo, had raised funds for the ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper to the amount of €21,106.90 (around N4.5 million) in a bid to help with his cancer treatment.

Agbonavbare played for Rayo Vallecano between 1990 and 1996 making more than 100 appearances for the Spanish club. He was also a member of the 'Golden Generation' of the Super Eagles in 1994.

Speaking on the death of the former Nigerian goalkeeper, a former Super Eagles attacking midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju described the passing away of Agbonavbare who was his team mate as unfortunate.

Adepoju said Nigeria has actually lost a great ambassador and hero in the person of the former Super Eagles magnet, Agbonavbare. "Oh my God, I know he is battling with cancer but it never crossed my mind that death is very much around the corner.

"It's really sad, shocking and unfortunate, may his ever gentle soul rest in perfect peace," said the former 3SC star to supersport.com. Adepoju said the goal tender died a great hero and should be remembered and treated the same by the government.

"Agbonavbare was gentle, easy going and nice person. He was a dedicated goalkeeper as well as team player. "He defended the colour of Nigeria perfectly well and a worthy ambassador.

"Agbonavbare was a hero, represented Nigeria well and done greatly, too winning the Africa Cup of Nations title in 1994 and other laurels.

"He should be remembered and respected as great Nigerian and accorded due rights meant for great heroes," said Adepoju. Agbonavbare equally lost his wife to cancer few years ago.
