Nigerian man bags life sentence in Tanzania for drug trafficking

A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Joachim Ike, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of drug trafficking by a Moshi High Court in Tanzania, reports Daily News.

Ike was arrested at the Kilimajaro International Airport on May 11, 2013, and during a search, 7kgs of heroin was found on him with a street value of over Sh300 million.

The presiding Judge, Benedict Mingwa, in delivering his sentence, ruled that the evidence by the prosecution against Ike was beyond reasonable

“The evidence produced by the prosecution, along with the testimony provided during this case clearly shows that the accused person committed the offence,” Judge Mingwa said.

Despite pleas by his defence lawyer, Philip Njau, for the judge to allow Ike to serve his jail term in Nigeria, Mingwa insisted that the convict must serve in the East Africa country since that was where he was arrested and charged.
