70 Dead, As Police DPO Goes Missing During Ethnic Clashes In Northern Nigeria

A member of the House of Representatives representing Langtang North and Langtang South Federal Constituency of Plateau State, Hon Beni Lar, Tuesday put the death toll in the attacks on some villages in the state at 70.
Besides, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) attached to the Langtang divisional headquarters, has been declared missing since the attacks on Bolgan, Karkashi and Magama villages in Langtang South Local Government Area, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Addressing the displaced persons at Mabudi, Lar said apart from about 70 persons that were killed, many were still missing.
Lar, who described the attacks as barbaric, said the herdsmen, who invaded the three villages, launched the attacks with the intention of wiping out the villagers, adding that they were able to carry out the attacks because of the vulnerability of the people.
“From what I gathered, the Divisional Police Officer of the Nigeria Police is still missing, while 7,000 people have been displaced, aside from about 70 people that were killed. The intention of the attackers was to wipe out the entire inhabitants of the villages for just no reason,” she said.
She implored the federal government to complete the roads in the area to further open up the locality, adding that security men were unable to access the villages in good time to rescue the victims because of the bad terrain.
The lawmaker promised to sponsor a bill to address incessant clashes, especially frequent invasion by the herdsmen of villages in the state to wreak havoc in the area.
She also urged the government to set up a panel to look into the recent crisis.
Meanwhile, a source close to the police said the missing police officer was out on an assignment when the herdsmen struck and he has not been seen since then.
