A TransAsia flight clipped a bridge shortly after takeoff and plummeted into a shallow river near the island's capital of Taipei on Wednesday, killing at least 12 people. These are the latest updates:

State media have reported that 26 people had been pulled from the plane, with rescue efforts continuing to rescue any survivors.

A total of 58 people were on board the domestic flight.

As many as 31 passengers were from mainland China, Taiwan's TVBS news broadcaster said

The country's Central News Agency said the plane was travelling from Taipei to the outlying island of Kinmen when it lost contact with flight controllers at 10:55 a.m on Wednesday.

It is the second of TransAsia's French-made ATR 72 planes to crash in the past year. Last July, a flight crashed while attempting to land on the island of Penghu off Taiwan's coast, killing 48 people and injuring another 10.

Emergency rescue officials are continuing to try and help those still on board in inflatable boats crowding the partially submerged fuselage of flight GE235, which is lying on its side in the river.

Taiwan's fire department has classified 10 of the passengers as showing "no sign of life" and one killed. Twenty-eight people had been rescued, leaving 19 still unaccounted for.

Pictures from the scene of the crash are showing the desperate attempts to free the remaining 31 people still trapped on board.

This still from a car's dashcam footage shows the moment the aircraft went sideways, clipped an elevated road and crashed into a river shortly after it took off.

Teams of rescuers in rubber rafts are working to free passengers and crew still trapped in the wreckage.

Wu Jun-hong, a Taipei Fire Department official who was coordinating the rescue, has told the Associated Press the victims were among 27 people pulled from the plane.

The 31 people who remained unaccounted for either were still in the fuselage or had been pulled downriver.

Fuselage from the aircraft landed in the Keelung River near the city's downtown Sungshan airport. Local media reports that the plane also hit a taxi, injuring its driver.
