Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe is said to have called off a trip to Ghana which would have seen him deliver a presidential lecture at a Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize awards to be held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.

The organizers of the event, Millennium Excellence Foundation, could not explain why Mugabe called off the trip, according to a report by Accra-based Citi FM.

Zimbabwe embassy officials were also tight-lipped as to why the African leader would no longer show up.

Mugabe’s visit to Ghana had been hugely anticipated, with billboards having been erected to welcome him.

The Zimbabwean leader is no stranger to Ghana. Between 1955 and 1958, he stayed in Ghana where he educated at the Achimota Secondary School.

He even married a Ghanaian woman , Ama Sally, who later died.

The awards ceremony is set to go on despite the setback.
