Ghanaian legend Michael Essien had to be consoled by Mourinho after awful birthday at Real Madrid
It has been revealed that Chelsea legend Michael Essien had to be consoled by manager Jose Mourinho after a particularly disappointing birthday while at Real Madrid.
The midfielder invited the whole squad to a party for his 30th birthday while at Los Blancos, but only Luka Modric and Ricardo Carvalho turned up to the bash.
New book ‘Jose Mourinho: Up Close and Personal’, serialised in the Daily Mail, reveals Mourinho then had to console his player by telling him it had happened because his squad mates were too interested in themselves.
Essien was on loan at the Bernabeu for the 2012-13 season, the final rocky campaign of Mourinho’s turbulent reign at the club.
This appears to have had an effect on Essien’s time at the club, resulting in what may one of the more depressing birthdays a multi-millionaire footballer can have.
