Gabon To Face Guinea-Bissau In 2017 Afcon Opener
Hosts Gabon will face Guinea-Bissau in the opening game of the TOTAL Africa Cup of Nations 2017 at the Stade de l'Amitié in Libreville on the 14th of January.
It was confirmed on Wednesday evening that the Panthers will go head-to-head with the AFCON newbies in the first match of the tournament - Burkina Faso and Cameroon complete a competitive Group A.
For Guinea-Bissau the tournament will be iconic as it will be their first, having edged Congo, Kenya and Zambia in the qualifiers to successfully book their place at next year's showpiece.
"All the groups are tough. For us as Guinea-Bissau, it will be our first time and we are a team with no experience," said Guinea-Bissau head coach Baciro Cande
"We have good and professional players who can contribute in our quest for good results. During the qualifiers we eliminated Zambia, Kenya and Congo, and we can do better.
"It will be difficult playing the host country in your first match in a competition of this nature. We will work hard for good results. We are here [in Gabon] to work and do our best to make Guinea Bissau proud and we are not tourists," Cande concluded.
