In North-central Nigeria, The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abayomi Akeremale, on Saturday, confirmed the arrest of Benjamin Jato alongside 12 members of  a group allegedly threatening the peace of Koro people at Agyaragu in Jenkwe development area of the state where 10 persons were killed and over 70 houses set ablaze, last Wednesday.
Mr. Akeremale, who confirmed this in a telephone chat with Sunday Tribune in Lafia, said all the suspects had been detained at the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), while efforts were on to fish out other perpetrators of the dastardly act.

He said police were still investigating the reasons behind the  killings, assuring that anybody found to be masterminding the massacre would  face the law.

The CP said the gang leader was arrested through a tip-off and was caught with an AK47 rifle with 28 rounds of ammunition.

He appreciated the assistance and cooperation of the residents so far to the command, urging them not to relent because “security of life and property is a joint responsibility. The citizens should continue furnishing the command with necessary information and we promise to treat such information with utmost confidentiality.”

It will be recalled that Agyaragu, the headquarters of Jenkwe development area, was last Wednesday attacked by militia group of Eggon people known as Ombatse, meaning the time has come, over an allegation of stealing motorcycle by two rivalry groups.

Following the unrest, with one week impeachment notice issued by the State House of Assembly to the governor to address the incessant communal clashes, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, during the state live broadcast placed indefinitely ban on all ethnic-cum-cultural militia groups under whatever name and their activities and charged the security operatives to ensure total compliance of the directive.
