US President Obama Appeals For Peaceful Elections In Kenya

The White House Tuesday released a video in which President Barack Obama speaks directly to the Kenyan people -- in both Kiswahili and English -- urging a peaceful vote on March 4.
President Obama cites his personal connection to Kenya, saying he is grateful for the welcome Kenyans have given him and his family "to your beautiful country.

, the American leader calls on Kenyans to "reject intimidation and violence and allow a free and fair vote".

By respecting democratic standards, President Obama tells his Kenyan audience, "you can show the world you are not just a member of a tribe or ethnic group but citizens of a great and proud nation. I cannot imagine a better way to mark the 50th anniversary of Kenya's independence".

The US is not endorsing any candidate in the Kenyan election, President Obama says.

"The choice of who to lead Kenya is up to the people of Kenya."

If Kenyans pass "another milestone toward a truly democratic Kenya," they can assist the country's development, the president states, adding that the US will help Kenya achieve its aspirations.
