A special court in New Delhi on Monday sentenced 17 policemen to life in prison for killing a 22-year-old student in 2009. A court in New Delhi had earlier found the policemen guilty of murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had said investigation revealed that the student, Ranbir Singh, was gunned down by police at point blank range. The policemen had alleged that the student was part of an extortion racket being trailed. They said the student was shot when he tried to flee from a checkpoint on the outskirts of Dehradun. AT Rao, the lawyer representing the student’s family said investigation showed that Singh body had 29 bullet wounds and bore torture marks.
He said the victim’s family wanted the policemen to be given death sentences.
