[NIGERIA]: Explosive Detonated At Ruling Party Chieftain’s House In Edo, Governor Oshiomole Held Responsible

Attacks on political leaders and their properties in Edo State continued in Benin at the weekend as materials suspected to be explosive device were detonated at a building owned by a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

The attack on the building of the former South-South vice-chairman of the Congress of Nigeria (ACN), who defected to the PDP in May, which is just about 200 kilometres to one of the gates of the Edo State Government House, was said to have been carried out at about 10:30p.m. on Saturday.

The attack left the ceilings of the gate house of the building, located at 16, Dennis Osadebey Avenue, shattered with a small hole in the ground at the entrance gate.

One man, who lives in the neighbourhood, said they had a loud bang at about 10:30p.m. on Saturday but they were uncertain of the direction of the sound.

Ize-Iyamu, who addressed journalists at the house in company with the State chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, early Sunday morning, accused the state governor, Oshiomhole, of causing the attack.

Meanwhile, the State government, through its Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Louis Odion, has reacted to the attack, describing it as a self-inflicted and amateurish one.

The claim of a bomb attack and subsequent reckless press statement by a self-styled “Pastor”, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, is another phase in what clearly has become the desperation of the PDP to spread falsehood and sow fear in the minds of the people of State with a view to simulating a crisis.”

, saying that the governor had consistently threatened him ever since he dumped the APC for the PDP.

“I received a call from one of the occupants of the house at about 10:45 yesterday (Saturday) that an explosive had been detonated at the compound. I quickly rushed there and I actually found out that a bomb was detonated.

“I categorically say that I hold the governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, responsible for what has happened,” Ize-Iyamu said.

Meanwhile, the State police command, in a statement signed by its PRO in Benin on Sunday, confirmed the attack, saying items suspected to be Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were thrown at the mini-estate.

“The explosion only affected the surrounding ceiling boards at the estate security post and part of the main gate. The impact dug a small hole at the entrance gate but luckily, no life was lost,” the police said in the statement.
