Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe's Warehouse Robbed

Zimbabwean police have arrested a suspect following an armed robbery at a warehouse owned by President Robert Mugabe's wife, a spokesperson said on Friday.

"There was an armed robbery at Alpha Omega depot in Bulawayo and one of the robbers has been arrested," national police spokesperson Charity Charamba told AFP.

"That's all we can say for now. Investigations are still in progress."

Grace Mugabe, 49, is one of the southern African country's richest businesswomen, and was the president's secretary before marrying him in 1996.

A state daily citing an unidentified source, said two pistol-wielding robbers raided the warehouse on Wednesday, making off with mobile phones and $1 040 in cash.

Bulawayo has recorded a rise in robbery cases in recent months including one incident last week in which thieves broke into a supermarket and got away with more than $15 000, according to the local media.

Churches, schools, shops and offices were some of the targets.

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) said robberies are on the rise in the southern African country.

In the first six months of this year, 355 armed robberies and 3 772 robberies were reported countrywide, up from 265 armed robbery and 3 474 ordinary robbery cases last year.
