West Ham United are confident that Andre Ayew will return to first team action by December, with the Ghanaian having opted against having surgery on the injury he picked up on his debut last week.

Ayew, who was a big-money signing for the Hammers from rivals Swansea, picked up a serious thigh injury in his first official appearance for the club in their Premier League opener at Chelsea last Monday.

Coach Slaven Bilic told reporters in the wake of the match that the Ghanaian would need surgery and was set to be out for the rest of the calendar year.

However, the Croatian later suggested that surgery was just one option for Ayew, who would also skip the process of going under the knife and instead undergo intense rehab which would have back in action sooner than initially expected.

The club’s head of medical and sports science Stijn Vandenbroucke has revealed that this is the course of action Ayew will undergo.

"Andre will not have surgery and we have started the rehab straight away, working two times a day," Vandenbroucke to,d West Ham’s official website.

"It is early to put a time-line on the rehab, but we are positive to reintroduce him in December."

Ayew’s early return is also good news for the Ghanaian national team, as it will allow him to regain match fitness before heading off to Gabon for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
