We Don't Want You! Zambian Fans Reject Igesund's Appointment As Coach
Information coming form Zambia is that football fans are against the appointment of new national team coach Gordon Igesund.
According to the Post of Zambia, Chipolopolo Soccer Fans Association argue that the former Bafana Bafana mentor will not help in improving the standards of football in the country.
The fans also question the decision of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to opt for someone who was rejected in South Africa.
On the other hand, the Zambia Football Coaches Association says the engagement of Igesund as national team coach is a step in the right direction.
Despite this, the fans association chairperson ,Yotam Mwanza, said it was a pity that FAZ had settled for a coach who was fired as Bafana Bafana boss following a run of poor results.
“We all know he was SA coach and was fired owing to poor results. So is he the person we are going to settle for?," said Mwanza.
"Is he the right one to take Zambia to higher heights? We doubt his credentials."
Furthermore, ex-FAZ executive committee member Henshel Chitembeya said Igesund’s appointment was questionable.
He argues that Wedson Nyirenda who coaches Mozambiqcan side Feroviaro de Beira, would have been the better option looking at his achievements in the Zambian Super League.
“His appointment leaves a lot to be seen whether it’s good or bad for the country," adds Chitembeya.
"But he (Igesund) is not the coach that I think will help raise the standards in the country.
“If his appointment was based on his achievements locally, then I will be right to say Nyirenda would have been the better option.
"Nyirenda has achieved something with local teams and I still insist he deserves a chance to be at the helm of the national team."
Reports claim that the former Orlando Pirates coach has been hired, but FAZ are yet to issue a formal statement.
