The Senate on Thursday passed for second reading the N253,199,752,409 budget of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) but questioned the N4 billion budgeted for the first lady’s office.
It said the expenditure would be illegal since the constitution does not recognize office of the first lady.

Before the FCT budget scaled second reading in the Senate at plenary on Thursday, senators also kicked against another N150 million budgeted by the FCT ministry to renovate the guest house of Vice President Namadi Sambo.

Senate leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, in the lead debate on the budget said “the sum of N4 billion is proposed for the construction of First Lady’s Mission Building. Also, the sum of N150 million is set aside for the renovation of Vice President’s Guest House in Asokoro”.

Deputy majority leader, Abdul Ningi, in his contribution argued that “N150 million is too much for the renovation of the vice president’s guest house in Asokoro. How much is the building that it will now gulp N150 million for renovation?”

Babajide Omoworare from Osun State also kicked against the expenditure saying, “I’m worried about the provision of bogus figures (and) there’s a lot of disconnect. This budget hasn’t shown the reality of what’s happening in and around Abuja. Provision of N4 billion for building a mission’s office for the first lady is scandalous.
