The State Department has closed 19 U.S. embassies and consulates located in or around the Middle East for over a week due to rumors of a “big” and “strategically significant” terrorist attack, Daily Mail reports.
The primary evidence U.S. intelligence has obtained regarding the potential attack is electronic communication among top al-Qaeda officers in Yemen. The recorded communication states that the operatives are in the final stages of planning an attack.
According to the New York Times, Yemen’s al-Qaeda affiliate has been linked to plots to blow up American-bound cargo ships and commercial flights.
Though U.S. officials have offered little information about the established threat, one report allegedly indicates that the feared terrorist attack could be mounted by people with explosives surgically-implanted inside their bodies. These weapons would be virtually undetectable by airport security.
One official, as quoted by ABC News, said that the closures were responses to a “specific threat against a U.S. embassy or consulate” described as a “concerted effort” to target an embassy or consulate in a Muslim country.
Last Sunday, Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss said that “the chatter” obtained by U.S. intelligence is “very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11.”
“The one thing that we can talk about is the fact that there’s been an awful lot of chatter out there,” Chambliss said. “We didn’t take heed on 9/11 in a way that we should, but here I think it’s very important that we do take the right kind of planning.”
