Vice President William Ruto Steps Into Uhuru Kenyatta's Shoes As Acting Kenyan President

Acting President William Ruto yesterday had a full in-tray and a busy diary at Harambee House.

Ruto will be President until Uhuru Kenyatta returns from The Hague.

Uhuru's status conference at the ICC starts this morning.

Ruto sent a message of encouragement to Uhuru.

"I stand with you as my brother, my leader, my boss and my President. As we navigate strange and unprecedented paths, I reiterate our conviction that in time, all will be well and we will be vindicated.

I also share with you the ideal of putting Kenya and its people first," he posted on his Facebook page.

"I am humbled by the honour and confidence that this appointment does me. I will strive to match your excellent standard in serving the people of Kenya. As always, I will remain your steadfast and loyal deputy, and will do all I can to honour your faith in me."

"I wait eagerly for your return from this little disruption so that you can once again focus on leading us in transforming Kenya."

Ruto arrived at his temporary office at 8am and held several meetings.

He met United Nations Office for Project Services executive director Grete Faremo and United Nations Development Programme resident representative Nardos Bekele-Thomas.

Faremo said Unops will continue supporting Vision 2030 through the United Nations Development Assistance Fund. She said Unops will share its expertise with Kenya and help in infrastructure development, devolution, healthcare, renewable energy and procurement.

Ruto also met the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua who briefed him on the pending issues Uhuru was working on before he left the country yesterday morning.

The acting President had a brief meeting with Information Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Ruto met the Kenya National High Commission for Unesco officials led by Dr Evergiline Njoka.

The officials briefed Ruto on their preparations for 50 years of Unesco in Kenya celebrations. The event will be held in Paris, France, at the headquarters of the organisation.

On Tuesday, Uhuru Kenyatta in a rare political moment handed power to Ruto in an acting capacity. The president invoked Article147 (2) of the constitution in making the decision.
