NIGERIA: Scores Feared Killed In Borno Border Village

Suspected Islamist terrorists, Boko Haram attacked Madari village in Kukawa council of Borno State on Tuesday, killing no fewer than 10 persons and adducting a woman with her two-year-old child.

Similarly, the arrest of 27 Boko Haram terror suspects in two undisclosed Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Maiduguri, Borno State after a tip-off on their infiltration of the camps has raised further serious security challenges.

Nevertheless, the Nigerian Armed Forces yesterday assured that all the lost territories in Adamawa and other parts of the North-East that were overrun by the Boko Haram would be recovered in no distant time.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh, gave the assurance when he led other service chiefs to a breakfast meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa. He told State House correspondents that the military was already turning the heat on the insurgents and pleaded for understanding from Nigerians.

He further reaffirmed the assurances by the President that elections would hold in the troubled north-east states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, noting that the military was on top of the situation.

The attackers, riding in a convoy of over a dozen Toyota Hilux vans and motorcycles, according to an eyewitness, Abor Modu, took place on the Maiduguri-Baga Road where the insurgents ambushed some motorists and traders returning from Cross Kawa fish market.

“We were returning from fish market of Cross Kauwa in the afternoon when gunmen blocked the road with tree branches and wood and started firing at us to stop for a search and identification,” Modu said yesterday on telephone.

“Initially, I had to stop with five of my passengers when I saw a Chadian resemblance of Boko Haram terrorist in a Hilux van mounted with multi-purpose machine gun and opening fire sporadically on any vehicle on sight.

“One of them approached me and asked where am was coming from and where I hail from. I told him, he and he further asked about my passengers, and then he left. After some time, one of them came again and asked what I was doing, and I told him I was supplicating. Eventually, they left me alone after killing 10 passengers in my vehicle and two others.”

He said that more persons were also killed during the three-hour attack, after which the insurgents fled in convoy towards Kukawa.
