2 soldiers linked to Zambia ritual murders, appear in court

Two soldiers have been arrested and have appeared in court after they were found to be linked to recent ritual murders that sparked xenophobic violence across Zambia's capital Lusaka.

Zambian authorities recently arrested over 200 people for rioting and ransacking Rwandan-owned shops in Lusaka over allegations that foreigners were behind a string of ritual killings.

The violence started in Zingalume and George slums in the capital where dead bodies were found with missing parts such as ears, hearts and penises had been removed.

According to Times of Zambia, the two soldiers were arrested together with a traditional healer and a Zambia Air Force (ZAF) civilian employee.

The report quoted police as saying that the ritual acts were committed in a similar fashion by crushing the left side of the head, removing body parts and later dumping the deceased near their homes or a nearby drinking place. In all the incidents, a stone was found near the dead bodies.

The Post said the four were found guilty of seven counts of murder.

The case was adjourned to May 20.
