A South African DJ who has been accused of murdering his girlfriend testified to a High Court in Palm Ridge claiming that he is innocent of the crime and that his girlfriend was an alcoholic who abused and hit him regularly.

His girlfriend was jealous and often hit him, former Jozi FM DJ and murder-accused Donald Sebolai testified on Friday.

He painted Dolly Tshabalala as a jealous girlfriend who enjoyed her alcohol, at times physically assaulted him and accused him of sleeping around.

Yet, in the end, they always patched things up because of "love", he told the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge.

He always wanted to protect her, the DJ added.

On one occasion, he alleged had to save her from a friend of his, Sizwe, who had tried to take advantage of her as she slept at the back of her car, passed out after a night of heavy drinking.

"Sizwe and I had been drinking liquor. It was at night. Dolly arrived at my place and said she had come to fetch me. She wanted us to go back to the place where she had been drinking," said Sebolai.

"I could see Dolly was drunk and I asked myself how she had driven in the condition she was in," Sebolai told the court, adding Tshabalala was loud and had staggered into the house.

Sebolai said he convinced Tshabalala to not go back to where she had initially been drinking and suggested they go drinking at a place closer to where he lived.

The three of them went to Ben's Place, a nearby establishment where they were joined by other friends.
